CASE STUDY:
Spark Capital – New York Headquarters
Project Overview
Spark Capital, a Boston-based venture capital firm known for early investments in companies such as Twitter, Wayfair, Slack, and Warby Parker, expanded its New York office to create a dynamic, collaborative workspace for its Boston, San Francisco, and New York teams. Located in a SoHo loft building, the office was designed to foster fluid movement, open collaboration, and visual transparency, with spaces that accommodate both formal presentations and informal brainstorming sessions. Inspired by the graphic patterns of traditional Japanese rock gardens, the design integrates concentric “ripple” motifs that symbolize balance, creativity, and the firm’s impact across its portfolio.
Challenge
The architectural vision required a unique, custom wall system that could achieve 12-foot heights, incorporate truly divided light mullions, and maintain full visual transparency between reception, conference, and staff work areas. Logistics presented a constraint: the glass panels could not exceed elevator dimensions, necessitating a creative approach to achieve the desired aesthetic while adhering to the building’s limitations. The design demanded precision engineering, flawless alignment, and a wall system that complements the overall architectural concept while providing ease of use for day-to-day operations.
Solution
PK-30 developed a custom solution tailored to the project’s exacting requirements. The installation included:
- 3 swing pivot doors (12’ tall) with two horizontal mullions
- 2 fixed panels (6.5’ x 12’) with two horizontal and three vertical mullions
- 1 fixed panel (8’ x 12’) with two horizontal and three vertical mullions
By combining custom engineering with meticulous fabrication, PK-30 delivered a wall system that maximized height, light, and openness. Each panel was crafted with truly divided light mullions, and all components were sized to accommodate transportation and elevator limitations without compromising the design intent.
Results– Why PK-30
The PK-30 system enabled visual transparency, spatial fluidity, and a sense of openness, supporting the collaborative nature of Spark Capital’s office. Our custom solution ensured that highly detailed mullions and oversized panels were flawlessly installed and perfectly aligned with the design intent. PK-30’s walls integrated seamlessly with the surrounding wood, glass, and CNC-milled architectural elements, reinforcing the ripple-inspired design motif.
Conclusion
PK-30 delivered a bespoke, high-performing wall system that enhanced the functionality and visual appeal of Spark Capital’s New York office. By combining precision engineering, design flexibility, and flawless installation, PK30 enabled the project to meet its goals of collaboration, transparency, and spatial elegance. The result is a refined, functional, and visually striking office environment—an embodiment of The PK-30 Experience, where ease of installation, exceptional performance, and simple operation come together to deliver lasting value for clients and designers alike.
