PK-30 System has committed to environmental stewardship by becoming a member of the USGBC and by designing its products to meet the strict environmental standards. While no product is currently able to be LEED-Certified, PK-30 System products may assist in the LEED certification process within key credit sections.
The LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based standard for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings created by the U.S. Green Building Council. The LEED program has gone through numerous updates since its first release. The latest versions LEED v4 and v4.1 classify the projects into a number of rating systems. This report will focus on the two rating systems that most directly apply to projects that will use PK-30 System’s products:
Building Design and Construction (BD+C), evaluates all types of new construction or major renovation projects. Interior Design and Construction (ID+C) is focused on interior spaces such as tenant improvement projects in existing buildings.
To obtain certification for a project a certain number of points must be acquired.
- LEED Certified: 40-49 points
- LEED Silver: 50 – 59 points
- LEED Gold: 60 – 79 points
- LEED Platinum: over 80 points
Points are achieved by earning credits in 7 categories. The credit categories include sustainable sites, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, indoor environmental quality, and the two bonus categories are innovation and regional priority. One important extension of our commitment to the environment is in supporting the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED Program. It is important to note that products cannot be “LEED Certified” but PK-30 System products assist in the LEED Certification process under the following credits:
LEED Score Card
LEED v4/v4.1 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization — Environmental Product Declarations Credit
It is aimed to encourage the use of products and materials for which life-cycle information is available and that have environmentally, economically, and socially preferable life-cycle impacts. Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) which conform to ISO 14025, 14040, 14044, and EN 15804 or ISO 21930 and have at least a cradle to gate scope contributes to the achievement of this credit. PK-30 system has a publicly available product-specific Type III Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). The PK-30 EPD includes external verification in which the manufacturer is explicitly recognized as the participant by the program operator and it is valued as one whole product for purposes of credit achievement calculation. LEED v4/v4.1 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization — Sourcing of Raw Materials:
The credit rewards project teams for selecting products verified to have been extracted or sourced in a responsible manner. PK-30 System products contributes to this credit using the following paths: Recycled Content: PK-30 system includes aluminum which has both postconsumer and preconsumer recycled content. The recycled content of the system is calculated project-specific according to the weight of each component and it is generally between 10% and 30%. The PK-30 System’s staff will work with project teams to design a partition with the highest possible recycled content. PK-30 System will specify FSC-certified wood in their wood panel partitions upon request. This FSC wood will come with full Chain of Custody forms and invoices showing the FSC numbers, as required by LEED.
LEED v4/v4.1 Building Product Disclosure and Optimization — Material Ingredients:
The credit rewards project teams for selecting products for which the chemical ingredients in the product are inventoried using an accepted methodology and for selecting products verified to minimize the use and generation of harmful substances. PK-30 system has a published, complete Health Product Declaration with full disclosure of known hazards in compliance with the Health Product Declaration Open Standard. LEED v4/v4.1 Design for Flexibility Credit:
Design for Flexibility credit is included in the Materials and Resources category for new construction healthcare projects. Other new construction projects can achieve it under the Innovation category. Interior Design and Construction (ID+C) projects can pursue Design for Flexibility as option 3 under Interiors Life-Cycle Impact Reduction Credit. It is aimed to design buildings for flexibility and ease of future adaptation in order to conserve resources. One of the requirements of the credit is to design at least 50% of interior nonstructural walls, ceilings, and floors to be movable or demountable. PK-30 System directly contributes to this credit because it is fully demountable and is able to create flexible spaces with moveable options.
LEED v4/v4.1 Construction and Demolition Waste Management:
The credit aims to reduce construction and demolition waste disposed of in landfills by recovering, reusing, and recycling materials. PK-30 system comes with recyclable packaging and the installation is carefully planned to minimize waste. Compared to traditional drywall construction, PK-30 System produces very little construction waste.
LEED v4/v4.1 Low-Emitting Materials:
The intent of the credit is to reduce concentrations of chemical contaminants that can damage air quality, human health, productivity, and the environment. It covers volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions into indoor air and the VOC content of materials. The PK-30 System is primarily composed of inherently non-emitting materials such as aluminum and glass. Wooden components are certified as “GreenGuard Gold” which meets the credit requirements. PK-30 system does not usually require the use of interior adhesives, paints or sealants onsite. GreenGuard Gold certified sealant product is provided by PK-30 if required.
LEED v4/v4.1 Daylight:
It is aimed to increase the natural daylight in the building in order to connect building occupants with the outdoors, reinforce circadian rhythms, and reduce the use of electrical lighting. PK-30 System glazed partitions significantly increase the daylight levels inside the building compared to opaque partitions. PK-30 system has excellent visible light transmission and maximizes the potential to comply with the credit.
LEED v4/v4.1 Quality Views:
The intent of the credit is to give building occupants a connection to the natural outdoor environment by providing quality views. PK-30 System glazed partitions increase direct line of sight to the outdoors and greatly contributes to the achievement of the credit.
